2.2 Development of modern seismic and electromagnetic methods for preinvestigation for underground infrastructure facilities in urban environment

 

 

A well-functioning infrastructure for transportation of goods and people is crucial for a modern society. Infrastructure projects in general, and particularly tunnel projects, are long projects. Tunnel projects are challenging since they are carried out underground and the rock properties not seldom vary a lot along the tunnel line. Complex geology in combination with initially limited knowledge about the rock mass conditions complicates planning and increases the risk for problems and/or unexpected costs during the construction. Therefore, a correct and useful preinvestigation well before the construction starts is always required. To achieve this in an urban environment using geophysics is a challenge due to the urban noise – power lines, tracks, bridges, traffic etc. The urban environment also complicates geological mapping. Despite these limitations, geophysical methods have, during the last few years globally seen an increased use in urban environment. This project aims to develop seismic and electromagnetic methods for use in Swedish urban conditions, and thereby improve the ability to perform cost efficient underground infrastructure projects in a cost efficient way.

 

Main activities:

 

The project aims to develop two unique geophysical methods especially desugned to meet the urban noise challenges. A 9-component seismic landstreamer holding 3-component geophones and 3-component vibrators (sources) will be developed in close cooperation with the industry. The existing RMT system will be modified for collection of data also on (fresh) water, where traditional land based geoelectrical methods are inefficient. Both systems will be tested in the Bypass Stockholm project and on sites in collaboration with the industry.

Vision

 

To develop high-resolution geophysical tools and techniques for 3D modeling of rock mass characterization and classification at both planning and construction phases, an increasingly important issue in urban areas, characterized by high level of noise.

Aims

 

1.Analysing and interpreting state of the art geophysical and geotechnical methods in order to improve existing technique.

2.Develop technique and tools for shallow geophysical investigations in urban areas.

3.Demonstrate the capability of multicomponent seismics for characterization of underground properties in areas known to have geotechnical problems.

4.Mapping of fracture zones and other geological features in detail and with high resolution, for better design of tunnels and better handling of stability issues in soil and rock.
